Service Dogs are federally protected by law. Service Dogs can be fully trained by their owners, professional, and even novice trainers. There are only two requirements for a dog to be considered a service dog. The first requirement of any Service Dog is to be well-behaved, obedient, and always under the handler's control. The second requirement is that Service Dogs must also be trained to perform a specific medical-related task, such as detecting low blood sugar (diabetic dog), detecting seizures (epilepsy dog), helping the visually impaired (seeing eye dog), performing deep pressure therapy for those who have PTSD, etc.  

Therefore, it is entirely possible for a novice owner to choose the right dog and utilize our online courses to teach reliable on and off-leash obedience to complete the first requirement of a trained service dog. The same owner can then focus on training the required task that suits their medical needs. Our training methods and principles can help train and shape these more complex task-specific behaviors, but the steps needed to teach those specific tasks are not included in our current course offerings. Those steps can be found in various other places online, such as consulting with other service dog trainers and owners and hiring a professional trainer to teach the final portion of the service dog training.  

Please keep in mind that currently, no official documentation, testing, or certification is required by law on a local, state, or federal level to classify any dog as a service dog, even though service dogs are required by law to be admitted into public and private establishments. A "service dog" that is not well behaved, well-mannered, or the handler cannot maintain control and obedience of the animal, then the "service dog" can still be legally ordered to be removed from the same establishments. In other words, even if the dog can detect low blood sugar, detect a seizure, or help someone with PTSD if the animal is unruly or disobedient, it can still be legally removed from an establishment. Please note that not all E-Collars on the market have the features offered by the brand we recommend. Every manufacturer has its patented technology for delivering stimuli through the unit. Do your research and compare your E-Collar's features with our recommended models from E-Collar Technologies. If they match, then yes, you can complete the program with your existing E-Collar. We are big fans of E-Collar Technologies but have also used and recommended Dogtra, Martin Systems, and Garmin Collars.

We cannot recommend any brand of E-Collar that we have not experienced. They may not emit the same safe type of stim and often have too few features to find the proper working levels your dog needs. Most quality E-Collar units will cost $180 or more. The cheap ones, $99 or less, are typically subpar and less effective.

To further clarify, if the E-Collar unit you want to use does not have very fine graduations in the levels of the unit (i.e., 0-100 on the levels) and instead has very coarse levels that jump up significantly between the levels (i.e., 1-10), then I would not recommend the tool at all.  

Absolutely. E-Collar training is the single most effective way to override a dog's inborn desire to chase things. The E-Collar is also the most effective tool for training reliable recall (the dog returns to you when called) and off-leash heeling (the dog never leaves your side).

We recommend that the youngest dog to start E-Collar training with is 5 months or older. Most dogs will not be well versed in basic commands until about 5 months or older, and we do not recommend overlaying the E-Collar on any command until the dog has been trained to perform that command properly.  

For instance, if your dog needs to learn how to go to a placeboard, putting an E-Collar on the dog and pressing buttons will not magically teach the dog how to go to the placeboard. However, if the dog has been adequately trained to go to a placeboard using food lures, hand commands, voice commands, or leash pressure commands, you can and should utilize the E-Collar to overlay off-leash reliability on that command. 

The same applies to every other command (sit, down, recall, heeling, etc.). The E-Collar does not teach a dog a command. It can, however, take a command the dog already knows and make it much more reliable both on and off-leash. In a professional setting, the E-Collar can be used with other training techniques to help teach new, advanced, or complex commands much faster and more efficiently.
